Title

Kodály Music Educations Approaches Towards Online Learning in the Elementary Music Classroom: A Case Study.

Description

The sudden shift to an online learning environment during the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in multiple occurrences worldwide. The pandemic also abruptly shifted educational practices from in-person to various virtual contexts, including synchronous, asynchronous, and hybrid models. Accordingly, teachers should adjust to the new routine of virtual teaching and learning, which has impacted their instructional and pedagogical approaches. This virtual shift has significantly influenced music classrooms because they lost synchronicity of singing and dancing together due to time lagging in the virtual setting. Given its heavy singing and moving nature, Kodály music educators should adjust their approaches by preserving its core principles. The purpose of this case study was to understand the processes by which Kodály music educators implement the Kodály methodology into the elementary virtual music classroom. This study consisted of four Kodály music educators within the United States and the United Kingdom. Each participant participated in two Zoom interviews while supplying additional material such as lesson plans and asynchronous instructional videos. The three themes that emerged from the data provided consisted of: a) Desire to Continue Kodály Sequence Virtually, b) Relying on Available Resources for Kodály Sequence, and c) Transforming Virtual Obstacles to Broaden the Learning Community. The findings of this study supply future educators with the necessary tools to expand the implications of online learning. Based on the culmination of data, this study recommends that further research occur due to the unprecedented moment in history. Future studies could supply educators with the necessary tools to engage in the online learning environment effectively.
