Synthesis of Precursor Molecules of Choline Geranate Derivatives as Potential Antibacterial Agents
Title
Synthesis of Precursor Molecules of Choline Geranate Derivatives as Potential Antibacterial Agents
Subject
Description
Previous researchers at Rider University have noted that while the deep eutectic solvent (DES) choline geranate (CAGE) is an effective antibacterial agent against gram negative bacteria it is not effective against gram positive bacteria. In order to increase its effectiveness against gram positive bacteria they synthesized many CAGE DES derivatives, two of which were extremely effective against gram positive bacteria. However, they were unable to confirm the true structure of these molecules. Therefore, this project has set out to resynthesize and fully characterize these molecules, however due to time constraints and difficulties in the synthesis this has not yet been completed. Several preliminary steps have been completed, namely the synthesis of the choline cation derivative in the form of a chloride salt, and likely the synthesis of geranic acid, although the geranic acid is not yet entirely pure, providing a perfect starting point to finish the project once time allows.
